Las palabras there is y there are son usados en inglés para determinar la existencia de las cosas, pero a diferencia del español son usados según la cantidad de los objetos ya sean singular o plural.

Para decir que hay solo un objeto se usara there is, por ejemplo:

Hay un lápiz en la mesa / There is a pencil on the table

 

Para decir que hay muchas cosas se utiliza there are, por ejemplo:

Hay manzanas en la caja / There are apples in the box
